Memorial Day Weekend in Washington, DC always feels different. There’s something emotional about being in the nation’s capital this time of year. The city slows down just enough for you to enjoy it, yet somehow becomes more alive. Flags line the streets, the monuments glow beautifully in the evening, families gather around the National Mall, and every corner seems to have something worth stopping for.
As someone who has spent years exploring DC (and now appreciates comfortable sightseeing a whole lot more in my 50s), I can tell you this: this weekend is one of the best weekends of the year to visit Washington, DC.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or you’re a local looking for ideas, here are my favorite things to do in DC this weekend.
1. Attend the National Memorial Day Parade 🇺🇸
There are plenty of parades in America, but this one feels meaningful.
Standing along Constitution Avenue, watching veterans, marching bands, military units, and families honoring loved ones—it reminds you why Washington, DC feels different from any other city.
Date: Monday, May 25, 2026
Location: Constitution Ave NW, Washington, DC
Address:
Constitution Ave NW & 7th St NW, Washington, DC 20004
My tip:
Go early. Bring water and comfortable shoes. Parking can be difficult, so Metro is your best friend.

2. Visit the Lincoln Memorial at Sunset (My Favorite Time)
I’ll be honest—no matter how many times I visit the Lincoln Memorial, it still stops me in my tracks.
Maybe it’s age. Maybe it’s perspective.
But standing there around sunset, watching the sky turn soft orange while looking over the Reflecting Pool toward the Capitol… it never gets old.
And once the lights come on? Absolutely magical.

3. Spend a Few Hours in Georgetown (Slow Down a Bit)
Sometimes DC can feel busy.
Georgetown reminds me to slow down.
Grab a coffee, stroll cobblestone streets, sit by the waterfront, and just enjoy the day.
Some of my favorite weekend stops:

4. See the Monuments at Night (Trust Me on This)
If you only do one thing this weekend, make it this.
During the daytime, monuments are beautiful.
At night?
They become unforgettable.
The crowds thin out, temperatures cool down, and the lighting completely changes the experience. The Lincoln Memorial feels powerful. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial becomes peaceful. The Washington Monument shines across the city skyline.
Places to see:
- Lincoln Memorial
- Vietnam Veterans Memorial
- Korean War Veterans Memorial
- Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
- Thomas Jefferson Memorial
- White House at night
My honest opinion after years in DC:
Nighttime is the best way to experience Washington.
5. Visit the Smithsonian Museums (Free!)
One thing I never stop appreciating about DC?
You can have an incredible day without spending much money.
A few museums I still genuinely enjoy:
Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
Address: 10th St. & Constitution Ave NW

6. Explore The Wharf at Night
If you want restaurants, waterfront views, live music, and a relaxed atmosphere—The Wharf is a great weekend stop.
I personally enjoy just grabbing a drink and sitting by the water for an hour.
You don’t always need a packed itinerary.
Sometimes the best part of travel is slowing down.

7. End the Weekend With a Memorial Day Reflection
Washington, DC on Memorial Day weekend isn’t only about sightseeing.
It’s also about remembering.
Take a quiet moment at:
- Vietnam Veterans Memorial
- Korean War Veterans Memorial
- World War II Memorial
- Arlington National Cemetery
You may come for the photos—but often leave feeling something deeper.
And honestly, that’s what makes DC special.
Experience DC the Easy Way (Especially if You Don’t Want Miles of Walking)
Let me tell you something I’ve learned over the years—Washington, DC looks close on a map, but after a few hours of walking, those memorials start feeling much farther apart than they seem.
I hear visitors say it all the time:
“We didn’t realize how much walking DC required.”
That’s why I genuinely recommend doing an open-air monuments tour, especially if you’re traveling with parents, grandparents, kids, or simply want to enjoy the city without exhausting yourself.
One local company I’ve seen visitors really enjoy is:
Hello DC Tours
What I personally like about the idea is simple:
- Small-group experience (not giant tour buses)
- Open-air views for photos
- Comfortable seating
- Great if you want to see more in less time
- Perfect for visitors who want to save their legs while still experiencing the major monuments
You’ll still stop for photos at major landmarks, but without spending your entire day walking between memorials.
Their tours usually cover places like:
- U.S. Capitol
- Washington Monument
- Lincoln Memorial
- Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
- Thomas Jefferson Memorial
- White House
- Vietnam Veterans Memorial and more
Meeting Point:
444 E St NW, Washington, DC 20001
(In front of the National Law Enforcement Museum, next to Judiciary Square Metro)
If you’re visiting DC for just a weekend, this honestly can be one of the easiest ways to see the city without feeling worn out afterward.
